Asking an aviation marketing consultant for an answer to this question may seem like asking the fox what kind of lock to put on the henhouse. (grin)

But there are three reasons to answer the question honestly, ethics aside.

    * We often get paid out of profits, which would be nothing if a company spends too much on marketing.
    * We often coach companies on aviation marketing and get paid for getting results.
    * Even the companies that pay us out of their marketing budgets wouldn't keep paying if we didn't get results.

Unfortunately, many of the companies we provide consulting services for with begin with one of two approaches to budgeting for marketing:

Bad (But Common!) Approaches to Marketing Budgets

Approach One – "Budget? What budget?"

Approach Two – (This is worse.) Developing a marketing budget as  a percentage of gross sales  from last year.   In other words, if sales were bad last year, they'll make up for it by investing LESS in marketing this year. Can anyone reading this GUESS how well that approach will work?

The Best Approach to Marketing Budgets We've Seen

That said, the best approach to determining a marketing budget I've seen is best expressed is by John Jansch, author of Duct Tape Marketing.

    "You should spend as little as you possibly can in order to achieve your marketing goals."

This statement assumes three things:

   1. That you have measurable marketing goals (let's say you express that in a number of clients you intend to acquire this year.)
   2. You have a calculated average of how much each new client is worth to your business.
   3. You know how much it cost to acquire each new client last year (divide your number of new clients by the amount you spent on marketing.)

So, to keep the math easy, let's say you're a high-value consultant that needs to acquire 10 new clients this year.  Last year you found 5 new clients and spent $10,000 on marketing.  So each client cost you $2000 in marketing expenses to acquire.

You need to run a check to ensure that your cash flow is positive – that your clients brought in enough profit to justify that expense. If that's the case, you're in good shape.

This year, you can use $20,000 as your baseline marketing budget ($2000 times 10 new clients needed). All things being equal, if you use the same marketing methods you used last year, theoretically you'll meet your goals and still have positive cash flow.

Get the Most For Your Money.

But since things never work out the same way twice, we recommend that you spend some time on the strategy of how you spend that budget. You'll want to get the very best value you possibly can for that money. If you use methods that are more effective, you will exceed your targets.

How do you do that? Start by taking a look at your very best clients – the ones that provided highest value. Where did they come from? Invest MORE in the marketing that got them in the door. Invest LESS in things that didn't bring you clients.

Fix or Get Rid of What Doesn't Work.

As an example, if you ran an ad in a publication last year, do you know for a fact that enough customers found you because of it?  If not, you're wasting that part of your budget.

If you suspect that an ad IS working but can't prove it, you can rewrite the ad so that there is an obvious clue that a customer found you that way.  (You can do this by providing a coupon or password for an additional savings or free gift, or by changing the phone number or web address that you ask readers to respond to.)

But keeping an ad in a publication because you always have, or because you like the salesman, is not a good use of your hard-earned cash.

Another very common example – if you made a trade show appearance and did not acquire enough new customers or valuable contacts to justify your expenses (including travel, meals, booth rent, and all other associated expenses) then you need to rethink your strategy and do a better job of tracking, or simply don't go next year!  Reasoning that  "we go to this show every year," or "everybody else is going," is not a sound business philosophy.

Examine every mailing, every show, every ad with the same kind of scrutiny. How many new clients contacted your company because of it?

Some marketing companies have a philosophy of "name recognition" and "getting your name out there" and that works for companies the size of Coke and Pepsi, (a concept called "brand advertising") but unless your budget is in that neighborhood, you should concentrate on advertising that gets proven results. You CAN do both- get your name out there, AND get potential customers to respond, and smart companies hold their marketing accountable for accomplishing both tasks.

Diversify Your Methods

Divert the money spent on non-productive marketing last year to more of the methods that actually worked. Better yet, experiment with something new.  Some portion of your marketing budget should be spent each year trying something you've never tried before. To keep growing, you need to reach parts of the market that are not yet familiar with your products or services.

And the more different effective marketing methods you use, the more stable your marketing efforts become. Each method reaches a different portion of your target demographic, and each method works in a different way. Fluctuations in the economy or in particular geographical areas won't impact your steady flow of new clients as much.

We know of one company that advertised for many years in a particular publication and always got reliable results.   They were reluctant to try anything else while they had this perfectly good, reliable channel.  When that publication went out of business, however, they were left scrambling for another effective method.

If you're just starting out, use your business plan as your guide for how much to spend on marketing. A word of warning – Many companies jump from method to method without giving their marketing a chance to work. Running an ad in a publication just once (to see how it works) doesn't constitute a fair test. Aviation is a very specialized field, and the numbers of responses are often so small that they're not as statistically reliable as they would be if you were marketing a product to the masses. Keep writing articles for your blog, even if you're not getting obvious response to every post in the first few months. Claiming 2011 Child Care Rebates and Benefits in Australia

What is the Child Care Rebate (CCR)?

    *

      From July 2011, you may choose to receive the rebate on a weekly or fortnightly basis, paid either to your care provider as a fee reduction or directly to your bank account.
    *

      Whether you receive a weekly or fortnightly CCR payment depends on when your provider submits your attendance data.
    *

      You can still choose to receive the rebate payments quarterly or annually as a lump sum directly to your bank account.
    *

      It pays up to 50% of your out of pocket expenses for the care up to an annual cap.
    *

      It is NOT income tested, so you may be eligible to receive it even if you don't get the benefit from your fees.
    *

      Your out of pocket care costs are calculated after deducting any CCB from your fees.



What is the Child Care Benefit (CCB)?

 This benefit is income tested and is usually paid directly to the providers to reduce the fees that eligible families pay.

To receive the CCR you must be eligible for Child Care Benefit (assessed at a rate of zero or more). This means: 

    *

      You must be using approved care provider, which includes care like Long Day, Family Day, Outside Schools Hours, Occasional and In Home.
    *

      You or your partner must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident living in Australia or be exempt from the Government's residency requirements.
    *

      Children under seven years of age must meet the Government's immunisation requirements or have an exemption.
    *

      You must be the person responsible for your care costs. If your employer contributes through salary sacrificing or packaging, you should discuss with your employer who is responsible for the costs.
    *

      To also receive the CCR you and your partner (if applicable) must have work, training or study related commitments at some time during the week or have an exemption.



How to claim 

    *

      You must apply for the CCB to receive the CCR.
    *

      You must visit the Family Assistance Office to apply for the Child Care Benefit.
    *

      Your eligibility for the rebate will be automatically assessed by the Family Assistance Office. Payments will be made once the Family Assistance Office have received child care attendance details from your child care service/s.



It is important to remember that the Child Care Rebate is not income tested. You may be eligible to receive this rebate even though your family income is too high to receive the Child Care Benefit. I get it. It's tough out there. Customer access to information on the internet continues to squeeze margins. Dealerships are just trying to make a buck in a fiercely competitive marketplace. You have to do whatever it takes to stay ahead of the competition.

I also get that some may view compliance as unnecessary, overrated, annoying, a waste of time and money, and downright harmful to profitability. These are perceptions and as they say, perception is reality.

Some employees may be tempted to step over the line ethically when trying to make a deal. After all, the chances of getting caught are pretty slim, right? That's one way of looking at it. Another way is to ask yourself what's really more important in the long run - flying under the radar or satisfying your customers? In my view, when it comes to compliance and ethical behavior, the true payoff is customer satisfaction and retention.  It really comes down to one simple premise - your customer's perception is the only reality that should matter.

"We have to advertise aggressively and do whatever it takes to drive traffic to the dealership." Customer Perception – "I hate the way you advertise.  Why is it that the deal is never what it seems? Like when you advertise a car for $7,000 and when I get there I find out that the $7,000 is only the up-front payment for a pre-paid lease and the residual is $11,000. Why can't you just advertise the real price with no tricks?"

How do you hire millennials? Like any good hunter, you need to go where the object of your search lives. For this generation, that would be on the internet. 5 Step Formula To Increase Your Productivity

How many hours are you spending a day to build your business? Are you counting them? So, what's the result? Whatever the result is, sure there is a way to get a better one!! Why am I saying it? Well the answer is pretty easy: Because there is ALWAYS a way do do things better!! Don't you think?

The fact is that you are an entrepreneur and not an employee, so instead of being paid for the time you work as an employee, you will be paid for the results.So your goal is not to make tings as long as you can, but the better you can.And if we act as smart entrepreneurs we may probably understand that if you invest time properly you will not only save time, but we can also spend that time to do more and more to increase your productivity!!

Lets take a look at our 5 Step Formula achieve a real smart entrepreneur mindset!!
Only a 5 Step Formula to Start With, Nothing More

If you have understood the importance of being efficient and you want to achieve that result to increase your productivity here's the 5 Step Formula you have to master:

   1. You must set goals, have you a plain?;
   2. Use 60 minutes intervals to operate tasks;
   3. 90% of time in MMA (Money Makeing Activities);
   4. Don't try to be multitasking, it is counterproductive;
   5. Avoid distractions.


So lets start with goals!! You probably have a goal, and this goal is to make money right? Well, we are not speaking of this kind of goals. We are speaking of targets on a time base.  You need a plain and you must setup targets for every month, every week or even everyday. Are you going to setup a blog for example? How long will it take? A week? Perfect, this is one of your targets and you need to do that!! Your blog will give you money if it's setup right? So the first you do that, the first you will earn!!

Then for our 5 Step Formula plain all the tasks on a daily base and divide all of them in 60 minutes intervals. For example plain to do facebook for an hour an then the following hour do some prospects. Try to group the same tasks so if you need 3 hours a day to call your prospects do it for 3 hour consecutelly. As humans, chainging tasks required at least 20 minutes to a full immersion so if you facebook 3 hours a day and do it one hour on the morning, one on afternoon and one on evening you will lose 60 minutes for nothing!!

Focus on MMA. Email ar not MMA!! So don't look at your email every 10 minutes because you are losing time for nothing. Do it twice per day, one in the morning and one in the evening, not more!! And don't write someone giant paragraph, a couple of sentences are enough. At least 30 minutes per day. And remember, MMA  are: Generating Traffic and Prospecting!!

Next for the 5 Step Formula don't be multitasking. We are not wery well on multitasking. So if you are creating a post, start and finish it without twitter on the middle.Focus on only one task at time or it's no use. Also, consider that multitasking operations tend to make you lose IQ. Not a joke.

Last, absolutely, avoid distractions. Is not an hobby, is a work and you need to do it well if you want results. So close your cell, don't sing for nothing, don't think about your lover, ect... Be on focus!! It's for your future so don't let anyone or anything waste it!!
